It's Election Day!

It's the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November, so... welcome to Election Day 2007! There won't not be as much action as there will be next year, but still a few races to keep an eye on:

  • Kentucky governorship: Governor Fletcher is almost sure to lose his seat today against his Democratic challenger Beshear. All polls have shown the embattled governor trailing by wide margins, and Fletcher had reached... 40% in only one poll throughout the summer and fall. In the closing days of the election, Fletcher has resorted to attacking the homosexual lobby and unearthing the 10 commandments.
  • Mississippi governorship: Governor Haley Barbour is heavily favored to win re-election against Jon Eaves, the Democrat. The contest was never very close.
  • Down-the ballot KY and MS races: Both states are also holding down-the-ballot races. Democrats look good in most statewide contests in Kentucky, but things look more difficult for Democrats in the Mississippi Assemblies where the GOP could have major inroads. Democrats control the House 74-48, so they are unlikely to lose their majority, but it could significantly narrow.
  • Utah and school vouchersThe most hotly contested ballot initiative is in Utah, where the broadest school voucher program was put in place recently. The opponents of the measure have managed to put it on the ballot today, and have organized heavily to defeat it. This is obviously a very important contest for many conservatives, obsessed with passing school vouchers -- and a defeat would be a terrible blow.
  • Virginia's state legislatureDemocrats are waging an all-out effort to capture the Virginia State Senate, in which they have a 4 seat deficit. There are about 8 very contested seats, and it is stunning just how much money has been spent on such down-the-ballot races. The Virginia Democratic Party is fully mobilized behind the effort, with Mark Warner, Governor Kaine and Senator Webb all campaigning with Democratic candidates. Democrats also have an outside chance of capturing the House, though that appears much more unlikely.
  • Mayor elections: Plenty of mayoral elections today, starting with Philadelphia where Michael Nutter is the run-away favorite. The most contested of the day's elections in is Pittsburgh, where a Republican candidate actually has a chance to defeat the incumbent Mayor in a predominantly Democratic seat. Also, New Haven's DeStefano and San Francisco's Gavin Newsom look to be elected with little opposition.
