Saturday polls: Obama opens lead in NH, and why so many polls from WA?
After yesterday's Newsweek poll showing Obama enjoying a dramatic bounce, the USA Today/Gallup poll looks to be more in line with what we have been seeing from other institutes:
Meanwhile, a number of state polls were also released in the past 48 hours, some of them from crucial swing states:
The polls from Nevada, New Hampshire and Iowa are certainly more interesting for it is in these states that the election should be decided. While Ohio and Florida certainly hold more electoral votes, Obama will need an alternative path if those 47 electoral votes stay in McCain's column, one made up of smaller states like NV, NH and IA. Keeping New Hampshire's 4 electoral votes might not seem to be that important a priority, but the state is among the only vulnerable Kerry states from 2004. And it would enable Obama to win the election by pulling out Iowa and Nevada and just one other (say, New Mexico). Polls in Iowa have been favorable to the Democrat over the past few months, though Republicans must be relieved that they are still in a position to contest that one. And Nevada polls have been showing a very narrow advantage for the GOP candidate.
- Obama is leading McCain 50% to 44%, which is the margin the latest NBC and CBS polls found as well.
- Obama enjoys the support of a high 84% of registered Democrats, and has a 12% lead among independents.
Meanwhile, a number of state polls were also released in the past 48 hours, some of them from crucial swing states:
- In New Hampshire, Obama has opened a big lead according to Rasmussen's latest poll. He is ahead 50% to 39%, up from a 5% lead last month.
- In Nevada, Rasmussen finds McCain holding on to a lead, 45% to 42%. This is down from a 6% lead last month.
- Obama's favorability rating is only at 50%, versus 58% for McCain.
- In Iowa, SUSA finds Obama leading 49% to 45%, somewhat of a disappointing result given that some Democrats believe Obama is in a position to put this Bush state away early.
- Update: A commenter makes the good point that I should have thought about that polls from Iowa when the state is flooded cannot possibly be reliable.
- In California, nothing much has changed since 2004 according to SUSA's latest poll. Obama is ahead 53% to 41%, including a 65% to 26% lead among Hispanics and a 42% gender gap.
- Finally, SUSA released a poll from Washington, again. It shows Obama leading McCain 55% to 40%, which is the margin he has enjoyed in most other polls from the state.

I don't think any poll in Iowa would be all that accurate while they are in the middle of a flood..I'm sure people there have other things one their mind...you also have to wonder who's supporters were most likely to be affected by the floods and weren't at home to participate in a poll

My armchair (well computer chair) theory for the attention that Washington is getting is that it is due to the tight race between Gregoire & Rossi. Gregoire is probably the most vulnerable Dem governor up this cycle, so there is probably a fairly brisk business in privately polling that race. With that much attention to the Gov race, covering the presidential race would be easy to add on.

The Hispanic numbers from CA are very interesting. I had thought that they would be the hardest group of voters for Obama to bring to his side. Because the makeup of the Hispanic vote is different in each state I will be interested in seeing the Hispanic breakdown in other large Hispanic states particularly Texas and Florida.

That was my thought as well, however, I would say Gregoire is one of the most vulnerable Democrat period. I think most political junkies would have a hard time naming five other Democratic governors, congressmen, or Senators who will have a harder time getting re-elected this year.

I agree with all of you that the reason why Washington is being polled is because Gov. Gregoire is the weakest Democratic incumbent gov of this cycle. That race is going to go down to the wire just like in 2004, althrough most polls I've seen have Gregoire barely ahead.
On Iowa, stevepdx you are probably right that the GOP will be able to contest the state but I still think that Obama has a distnict, if only narrow adavantage in Iowa only because McCain skipped the Iowa caucuses and therefore has little organization there. Just like how McCain has a distinct but narrow advantage in Nevada, which leans Republican more than Colorado and New Mexico.
The fact that a USA Today/Gallup poll shows the same margin for Obama as Newsweek give a little bit more of an indication that Obama really is opening up a lead, especially considering that Gallup in it's tracking polls have shown Obama with only a 2 point lead. I still want to wait if other polls show such a big lead.

About Washington and its gubernatorial race, note that SUSA did not poll the Gregoire-Rossi match-up in its latest poll...

To be more clear on this: just because SUSA didn't publish a poll on Gregoire-Rossi doesn't mean that they didn't do a survey on it. When a polling company is getting a lot of business polling contests privately, they tend to not publish the results as much to avoid giving away their product.

If the gubernatorial race is the reason for the abundance of polls in the state of Washington, I'm not sure why we haven't seen more polls coming out of North Carolina. Then again, Joe might be onto something about giving away too much data publicly.
